Forty yards of gold dust...
« on: December 08, 2015, 06:26 »
Mrs Growster and I were walking JRT round The Moor yesterday, and we have to try and avoid the waste trucks as it's our day for them all to charge around screeching and hissing, and the dog begins to get restless and mystified...

Luckily, as we chose a route away from the grunching monsters, I just happened to remember that there was some water pipe on a skip nearby and according to the rules, I was going to ask the owner if I could purloin same.

When we got to the site, there was a lad with several tattoos who pointed out the 'boss', who was on his mobile, and not actually working very hard, so I hung around and Mrs Growster and JRT headed for home while I changed feet occasionally and took in the lovely view.

After several minutes, the owner arrived in a small tank-like car, and tat-man pointed to me from afar (but I could hear him), saying 'That old chap over there, asks if he can have the pipe on the skip'!

What! I'm only sixty-eight!

Any road up, there was a friendly 'yes', and Growster now has forty yards of brand new pipe for all the nets he'll ever need, and also saved the cost - about sixty notes... Some other friends with dogs somehow met up with us at the same point, and two of them said that they'd also spotted this stuff, but as they don't have the benefit of an allotment, they couldn't think of anything to do with it all, but wasn't it a waste etc etc...

Now that's a Crimble present if ever there was one!

Well done that man,if you don't ask you don't get,I've got yellow gas pipe from doing just that when they were replacing the pipes on our estate. The chap was going to give me some off the roll! I told him I only wanted the date ends. Then we wonder where our money goes! There really ought to be a place where useful stuff is sifted out & made available for use by enterprising Growsters & Snowdrops😊

This weekend I picked up a half roll of 32mm blue pipe from the site Agent from a supermarket build that has about a week to completion and they are clearing the site. I explained I could use it on my allotment and the guy happily handed it over the mesh fencing.

Only problem was being thicker than 25mm pipe I could not roll it up tight enough to go in the back of the car but luckily enough I had a saw in the boot and cut lengths that I could then get into the back of the car.

I now have high sprout hoops for my new allotment as well as the old one.

Thank you, Snows, great minds think alike an' all that!

I can't wait to get it all cut up and on the garlic and spinach, which have canes and wire, and they're all a bit unsteady, especially in this wind!

How about shortening the enterprise name to just'Snowster'?

Excellent news Cadders, and a good find too! We're not growing sprouts, and I'm working out the highest we need for - say - spinach!

Very good I'll get the cards printed or shall we ask GG to do that for us?😄

for gas pipe I just pop over the road to our yard and ask, we usually have a skip full of yellow plastic in diameters up to about 300mm (but not usually the small stuff) its great to sink a 4" pipe 12" in for watering - leave 12" sticking out and the whole thing will take half a watering can and slowly allow it to seep in at root level.

we do the impossible daily, miracles take a little longer.

I think Goosey is a great bet for getting any printing done, Snows!

We might just be in time for Valentine's Day (see her post)!

Yup, Snowster Inc. looks promising as the new venture for 2016!

I feel inspired to go on the hunt around the local builders' skips now! Lasttime I did, I was able to acquire a few pallets, including 2 double sized (8 x4) ones which have since become my new wood seasoning store!
Some poly pipe would come in very handy though...
