The "he or she" question :)
« on: October 20, 2015, 14:09 »
Hi there,

I bought 2 day old chicks to keep a lone chick company and I am not sure of the sex of the Silkie... I believe it's a silkie! He/she follows the older chick around everywhere, and makes a racket when he cannot find big sibling. I have 2 pics, he/she is 5 weeks old now, so I am hoping I can get some sexing advice here. Many thanks in advance! :)

Hi Tasha, Silkies are notoriously difficult to sex, most of the time you can't tell until they start laying or crowing!

The only thing I would say is that the silkie cockerels have big nobbly crowns, looks like a carbuncle on top of their nostrils.  Your chick has, at the moment, quite a thin one from what I can see, but please don't go by what I say, I've known to be wrong!       ;)

I know these are adults, but just to show the difference between the sexes!   ;)

Many thanks... we are hoping it's a girl as we have become very attached to it.... was a ragged little thing pre feathers!! Will update if carbuncle gets bigger :)
