New Strawberry plants.

Hi There. i am having delivered some new bare rooted  Strawberry Plants in October,but i am thinking of potting them up and keeping them in the Greenhouse until spring next year what do you think?. i don,t want to plant them in the allotment and we get a frost and lose the lot.Thanks.

You won't lose them to frost.  Strawberries are very tough and actually need a period of cold to make them flower well the following spring.

If you have plenty of plants coming, what does work is to pot some up, leave them outside, them bring them into the greenhouse in early spring.  It gives you an early crop, so you can have strawberries for longer.  I've ordered some new bare-root strawberry plants and got a deal on a multi-buy, so this is what I am planning  :)

Well that sounds like a good idea, i have 48 comming, perhaps  i can plant half and pot up the rest, thank you.

Depends when you get them and what your soil is like. If you get them late Oct and you're on heavy clay, then I'd pot them up to reduce losses due to rotting over winter. If they're coming soon and your soil is reasonably light then chuck them straight in as they'll have plenty of time to establish before the soil get cold. Strawberries are tough, but barerooted will be susceptible to rot until they get established.

Thanks Nobbie, I am getting them the end of Oct, the soil is not heavy clay if any thing it,s more chalky. But i have already prepared the ground [dug in plenty of manure] Cheers.
