Éenmaaldragend strawberries
« on: August 27, 2015, 17:03 »
An unsual question. I have totranslate a short text from Dutch abouth strawberries. The title is Éenmaaldragend, which is literally one-time bearers. They also give in brackets Summer bloomers and June bearers. So does anyone know another name for these varieties of strawberries that resembles "one-time/once-only bearers" please?

No answer came the stern reply. How does one-crop strawberries sound?

To be fair, you didn't give people much time to answer Anton  :)

Here in the UK, we expect strawberries to crop all in one go and there are only a few varieties which crop on and off all summer.  These are known as ever bearers.  The one crop ones over here are known as early season, mid season and late season.

Would one-crop make people think they had to throw their plants away after a single season?  If it has to be a straight translation, it may be the best option

I was only joking with my "stern reply" comment. I was in a bit of a rush. According to my extensive study of strawberries there are June bearers (also called short-day types) and everbearers, with another one in between.
June bearers, they say, produce only one crop, which is why I decided upon one-crop strawberries. The job has been sent off now but I don't think the proofreader will look at it until tomorrow. So if anyone has any suggestions..., thank a lot.

I'd go with June-bearing for translation purposes.
Avg Last Frost Date, April 9, Avg First Frost Date, Oct 26
Avg Growing Season, 200 days

Thanks, but June bearing is one of the alternative names. They say Éenmaaldragend    then (literally) summer bloomers and June bearers in brackets. I have plumped for one-crop strawberries with June bearers and short-day types between brackets).

Don't know if this helps, but I think the "June-bearers" will be the normal early- mid- or late-summer-fruiting ones which will produce one crop per year, whereas the "summer-flowering" ones will fruit later on in the season and could be the ever-bearers. I don't know why the June ones are also called "short-day" because that's when we have the longest days.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.
