Worm things!!!
« on: January 19, 2008, 21:22 »
Someone on the River Cottage site is asking if the dead worm like things he is finding in his chook po is actually undigested earthworms, but I think I read on her a couple of weeks ago that there is a nasty parasitic worm that looks like an earthworm.  Can anyone remember what it was called please???

Can's answer that Grannie.  Not enough information.  How big, what colour one or many.

I would have thought that ingested worms would be digested .  Probably an Ascaris but impossible to say for sure.  I would recommend worming just in case  :!:

grannieannie, could they be the large roundworm?? If flattened and segmented could be tapeworm.
or if they are red could be the dreaded gapeworm??

here is a pic of roundworm, they are worm like and common in free range poultry.

Hope this helps! They are horrible!!!!   Good news flubenvet sorts them all out.... :D

:D Foxy, big thanks for putting the photos on a link rather than on the page here!!

(we've had worms in the past with our dog and cats, and the sight of them makes me feel so ill - and I'm not usually that squeamish)

photo of gapeworm -kindly in a link!! (dont want to upset Rosemary!! )
They are nasty and can be fatal in smaller birds like bantams. Symptoms are gaspng, yawning and poor condition. They typically look small, red and threadlike.
