chook with damaged nail
« on: January 18, 2008, 22:29 »
Hi peeps, could someone tell me please how to stop my chooks foot bleeding ,somehow he has torn a nail ,i discovered it this afternoon after they had gone in the pen,h was sitting in one of the boxes whith blood specks around him well saw where it was coming from and at the time it wasnt too bad, well checked him a bit later he had channged box and under him on the ground was an alarming amount of blood ,scooped him up and tok him indoors, bathed the foot and put cotton wool over it and pressed to stem the flow, well it eased up so put him in the downstairs shower room where i could keep an eye on him had put him in  a pet carrier so he could settle down.checked 3/4hour later, well tarantino wasnt in it.picked him up and cleaned him againhe was covered in blood all over his head checked him for any other places that might have been erupting none found just the foot so dried him and wrapped him in towels and sat cuddling him for i/2 an hour the foot began to ease he snuggled into me --hes an absolute beauty-- big male cochin caled Bud, grey and orange, walks round goosestepping.i put him back in the pet carrier and he settled down, put him in the utitlity room where the boiler is,its not too warm but i thought with all the blood loss he would be cold, havent disturbed the wrapping coz i dont want the bleeding to start up but am anxiuos a bit.
any advice would be grateful if anyone is still around now.

many thanks wendy

have you put some wound powder or purple spray on the wound to stop any infection.

Hi Babe .no the only thing i put on my animals is honey which i find an amazing healer ,but i was on my own when this happened and found it difficult holding the bird while i tended to him,i tried putting a dry dressing on him cotton wool and a tissue and bound it with duck-tape ,whhich fell off after a minute, am reluctant to disturb him now,so now the kids are home will get them to help in the morning, cars kaput at the mo otherewise id have took him to my vets.

Hi Wendy,
A nail can bleed quite a lot and a little blood goes a long way.  Keep him indoors as you have done and don't let him out as he will try to dig again and start it bleeding and possibly introduce an infection.

If you have any wound powder to put on it that would help.  I got mine from the local horse supplies place.

Hopefully it will have clotted overnight and you can assess the injury again in the morning.  If it has stopped bleeding and clotted over well I'd just use some wound powder.  If its more serious you may need to take some advice on dressings.

Do let us know how it is in the morning.  Tell him NO DIGGING until it's healed  :D

Hi I have a Sultan chuck (polly) who is always either ripping a claw out or breaking a feather on her foot, clumsiest chuck ever?

She bleeds like a stuck pig.  I usually bathe her with diluted dettol, dry, sprinkle with wound powder and keep her in till confident she's stopped bleeding.  After a little while she's right as rain.
