A tomato miracle!
« on: August 15, 2015, 14:44 »
I have just stood gazing at my emerald green tomatoes...and there's one - just one - that if I stand on one leg, face east and squint - I can see - with much hope and imagination - the faintest blush of orange appearing at the top. Could this be a ripening at last? (Probably rust!)  ::)

I picked my first properly red tom today and there are definitely more about to turn - they'll probably all get blight when I'm away at a festival next weekend...  ;)

All the toms on my plot are still darkest green though...

I had three variety of tomato plants (7 each), all of them started ripening over a week ago. The small ones produce  approx 20 ripen ones a day, the Beffy ones produce 1 or two ripen ones a day and the growmore produce about 10 red ones a day.

as good as last year!

I do prune/cut old leaves often so that the fruits can see the sun.

Mine are a funny shade of reddish brown at the moment. I live in hope  ::)

I pick them at that stage, I think they're mealy if you leave them to ripen any longer.

You can only taste one and see what you prefer  :D

Probably right there Mum, they don't go much darker, and look awful when cut up, but the flavour is just outstanding at that stage!

I've had ripenings for a week now too, mostly the cherry ones and the plum ones are starting now.  But the dancing with smurfs are going great guns and are a VERY dark purple, one could say black if you don't look too closely! LOL

I have been picking Maskotka and Latah cherry tomatoes for a week or so now, but I spied the first Black Sea Man beef tomato just colouring up in the greenhouse yesterday.

Can't wait  :D
