Unreasonable raspberry expectations?
« on: August 02, 2015, 07:12 »
OK - I'm confused now! It was my intention to buy some bare root raspberries this autumn - some summer ones and some autumn ones. The comments I'm reading here suggest that the summer ones may not perk up and come to life in time to bear fruit next summer...can I expect fruit next year from any type of raspberry bought as bare root this autumn?   ???

With summer raspberries, you prune out the canes which have fruited and tie in the new growth to produce fruit the following summer.  If you buy bare root canes, they will have to grow one year and then fruit the next.

The autumn raspberries are different.  You prune the whole lot down over winter and they re-grow the following year.  They take a little while to get established, so you may only get a bit of fruit the following summer, but you should get some.

There is always a risk with bare root that they don't take, but any good mail order company or garden centre will replace any duds you get  :)
