I thought that I had a new strong branch growing on my Ozarkblue bush but it has turned hairy, developed large green leaves and is about to flower 

It is definitely growing from the base of the plant.

I guess that the best thing to is cut it off but what is it?

I would say sunflower too - guessing from wild bird food. They are usually the stronger, healthier ones

     It looks so firmly attached to the base of the bush that I just didn’t consider the obvious. I guess it is the work of one of my mischievous blackbirds.

That will be the same blackbird that will get the blueberries !

Oh no it wont    If you look closely at the photo you can see the netting cage; the blueberries are safe.

Should I let the sunflower stay or will it take too much away from the bush  It looks quite quirky.
