What? Christmas potatoes?
« on: July 10, 2015, 15:41 »
So there I was  - in my local garden centre this morning and I found two baskets full of potatoes. 'Christmas Potatoes', they were marked as. 'Plant in July/August and have new potatoes for Christmas dinner. No chitting required.'
Say what? I haven't often grown potatoes but didn't realise we could plant them at this time of year. Or have I wandered into a parallel universe?     ???

You can, but I think the marketing is a little disingenuous. You may well be hit by blight later in the year and the plant growth will slow as day length shortens and it gets colder. If it gets really cold you will need to have a way of protecting the spuds from frost/cold damage. Some people can manage growing conditions for them, I certainly can't.

Just as long as you  wait 60 days between harvesting and planting, according to Iain from JBA Potatoes

Further down that thread is a quote from an old post of Iain's that says the latest to plant is the middle of August. Those harvested now would have to wait until mid-September.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Plant in pots (buckets) and move indoors September.

Add soil as they grow.

I have grown them with success in the past. But they are more costly than the spring seed potatoes. I think you get about 9 in a pack for 4 quid.
