Patience
« on: April 26, 2015, 08:52 »
I really tried this year to not be too enthusiastic early on.  Previous years I've had tomatoes courgettes and sweetcorn and beans all bursting to get out in the plot and too big for their containers.  Sometimes filling the greenhouse and covered in bubblewrap and me keeping my fingers crossed.

This year I've done everything a bit later and mostly been successful If we have a normal last frost date I'll be fine.  Courgettes and pumpkins just germinated outdoor tomatoes about two inches tall, delicate beans to sow next week probably.  My borlotti beans for drying have just germinated and they need a long season.  Sweetcorn are through and I could have waited another week with these but they'll make it past last frost without getting too big.

So surprisingly I've learned a few things

I haven't even started my squash yet, as (apart from the sunny last few days ) Spring seems to be running about a fortnight late here.

Patience is definitely a virtue. Challenge is that some things including sweet corn do need a fairly long season to ripen. I think the varieties we have now are supposed to suit the British climate but clearly you need to sow them at some point else they get frost in the autumn before they are mature. Perhaps if we are lucky the cold spring will give us an Indian Summer who knows😳😳😳?

Cheers HH
Keep digging

I've got a few squash earlies through but will sow more next week, after this cold snap has passed through,  I've got some sweetcorn and beans going but they're all just chancers and if it all goes wrong it's only seed, I'll plant more.  cues and toms still inside anyway.

I haven't got enough...with the consequence that I have three cucumber plants making baby cucumbers from a 5 inch pot in the greenhouse....and still a month to go before I can plant them out. Also the crown prince pumpkin has got so big it wont fit on the shelf of the mini greenhouse.  Next year it will be different...

Someone on our plot has put out their runner bean plants out already....    My seeds are firmly in the packet for another week or so!

I enjoy being patient-it takes less effort, less windowsill space and involves fewer disappointments.

I've just started sowing my many varieties of squashes :) tomatoes 2 inches tall.  It's more I've been busy than patient! Unfortunately it also means that my maincrop potatoes are only going in tomorrow - eek

The forecast for tonight is for a ground frost!!  From the Midlands north, Have just been to put our feathered friends to bed, certainly a  chill in the air.   Certainly patience is the best policy and the early bird does not necessarily catch the worm.

There's always that time when plants are really too big for the greenhouse, but looking great, and the frost may just get in the way of hardening off plants...

While it's quite cold still, especially during the nights, the day temps are pretty good, so I reckon the pinch will come during the third week in May at this rate!
