« on: April 16, 2015, 21:52 »
I sent off for some Banana shallots expecting a shallot that would turn into a clump! I have got seedlings  >:(
Ok thats my bad for not paying more attention  :D

Question is will they form a clump or just 1 shallot this year ?
I cook therefore I grow

Banana shallots don't clump. Shallots do, banana type don't  :) I only found that out last year and for two years I thought I had been doing something wrong  :nowink:

Keep us posted as I rather fancied trying them.

I didn't know that!  I'm growing them for the first time this year, I would probably think I had done something wrong too! Thanks!

I am so glad this isn't a commonly known thing (in a good way). I did feel rather daft when I found out  :)

If they are bulbs that you planted they will split.

If they were seedlings they will not. I maintain that these are not proper shallots but a variety of onions.

I have asked this question before. If you grow shallots from seed and save the bulbs for planting the next year do they split or just go to seed?

Salmo, I think it depends on which variety you grew.

If it's a 'proper' shallot variety that would normally split if you bought sets - then yes.

If it is a round type and bought as a set then it should clump. It is zebrune and banana shallots that don't so buying them from a supermarket thinking they will clump is pointless. Does that make sense?  :)

Oh that is worrying. Please let us know how you get on. Hopefully they will be an exception to the rule and form lovely clumps  ::)

Banana shallot seedlings will produce a single shallot. The size of the final shallot will depend on how far apart you plant them. I grew some from seed: four to a module, with each module finally planted out 15 cm apart (I didn't separate the seedlings) in rows 25 cm apart. Some of the shallots were smallish, but others were verging on small onion size. I didn't mind the variation.

One thing though, my banana shallots have never lasted as long in storage as the others I've grown (also from seed).
