New raspberry canes are still twigs :(
« on: May 02, 2015, 13:57 »
Am I the only one?

My white currents I bought at the same time have had leaves on them for ages, is it time for me to write a letter to Wyv@le?!  My fellow allotment holders' raspberry are in leaf but they are established. And the earlier type.

Should I be be expecting the Green Lady to pay them a visit or give up and hope that I can get some more in time to plant?

Thanks for any advice! I was struggling to find specific answers on the search function.

Hi, Have a look at the thread, raspberry canes - dead, which is on page 2 of this section.  Several people have been experiencing the same problem, but most are now showing at least a little bit of life.

Apart from 4 of mine which sprouted about a month ago, the rest of my 18 canes are still twigs  :(. I am planning to give them another week or two then email the supplier and ask what I might have done wrong/why this might have happened. The same supplier sent me rhubarb crowns which I had almost given up on when suddenly they sprouted last week.

Although there were a few signs of life from my Autumn Bliss a couple of weeks ago, it's only in the past week they've really got going, and they've been there for about 10 years!  ;)

Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

we spoke on the other thread about our dead twigs - in the last week another 4 more of my dead twigs is starting to show signs of life now

I would leave it till the end of may - I'm sure some welcome warmth ( if we ever get any ) will work it's magic  ;)

Wait for some warmth, 3 out of 9 of my new ones are just starting in leaf, so I've not quite given up on the others...

In the first year mine were like that and I had about 3 berries from 6 canes. Last year I had a fair few and this year they already look like they are romping away (autumn fruiting) so give them time....

I'd leave them a little- we've got a lot of rain tonight and then it's on/off rain with warm weather all week- if that doesn't get em going nothing will.  and the weeds....

Perhaps it is worth putting a cloche over them...?

My newly planted raspberry canes are also behind - other bareroot stock have sprung forth, though loganberries are also behind (which weren't). My pink goosegogs (again bareroot) are also behind.
Everything spotty....

My autumn raspberries "Autumn Bliss", newly planted last January, first showed signs of life 10 days ago when 2 canes out of 5 sprouted, another one showed signs of life today. So there is hope yet. Many others seem to be worrying about the same thing.
We come from the earth, we return to the earth, and in between we garden.
