Black peppers!
« on: October 02, 2006, 23:05 »
This is a message for Aidy - you appear to be the chelli/pepper expert - she was given some 'peppers' (because she has a avery large plot so all the left overs get passed her way). People never seem to know what thy have sown so she is somewhat in the dark.

Well, two of the plants have now produced fruits - 3 each, about the size of a satsuma, and very very dark green - they look black. Presumably they will ripen to red, but in the meantime, what are they? Anyone any idea.

Oliver
Keep the plot cultivated, that's the best way to ensure its future.

I've grown this variety in the past, (scroll downto Summer Salad F1). They're multi-coloured, about the size you descibe. The almost black ones may stay that coulour!

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

It is difficult to guess the type as there was at the last count around 4000 different ones, a picture would help loads if poss. The green ones with black spots may be Habernero's but again without a picture it is difficult, heat is very subjective, my wife will eat chilli that blows her head off but I cant seem to get them to register, the Habernero's do have a distinctive taste before the heat really kicks in. Sorry I couldnt help anymore at the moment.

Thanks to everyone for their replies. I will get her to take a picture tomorrow but the Summer Salads certainly look likely.

I grew the T&M pepper mix a few years ago.  The black ones were disgusting - bitter.  Never again!  Grown in a greenhouse.
