Too late for my Chilli's?
« on: March 06, 2015, 09:55 »
Hello.

I am weeks behind (I forgot) to sow my chilli's in January. Is it too late now and shall I just buy some plants in the Spring? Or just go for it? These are a mixture of Habeneros, Jalapeno types

Cheers
Mark

The Habs may struggle to grow a little to hit full production but the Jalapenos I am sure will be fine, with the increase of light levels and hopefully heat you will find they will soon catch up.
Although I do start mine early many on site tend to be just getting stuff going now, ok we are lucky in that we have tropical weather here in Blackpool  but what you gonna lose?

I'm only going to start mine this weekend.  There's no point to me doing it earlier because I don't have a heated greenhouse.  My plants are probably smaller than other peoples' but I got plenty of chilli's last year planting at this time.

It's not too late, though buying plants is always a nice easy option. :) If you are sowing, I'd sow them now - they will catch up now that the days are lengthening nicely. I first got my plot in March and sowed habaneros and jalapenos in April. I still got a crop - though a bit later in the season than others.

I only sowed mine 2 days ago.  Even my windowsill isn't very warm!    :(

Unlike tomatoes, I've always seen frozen/dried chilies nearly as valuable as the fresh ones. So a late harvest isn't always such a bad thing. You'e not that far behind. My Fresnos are only on their second to third leaves even now. Might be  bit late though for those long germinating stubborn hot sorts like the Nagas and Hungarian Wax. Sow and hope for a good Summer.

In the electric prop my Hungarian wax were up within the week, so I don't think it's too late - if you've got heat to start them  ;)

Got mine in yesterday along with my tomatoes.  Can't wait for them to start growing now.  Love seeing them come up.

i'm not starting mine until next week. no heat in the tunnel and the window sill is still too cold some nights, i can't be doing with the faf of moving them in and out all the time.

i've still got loads in the freezer, even though i started them late last year.

I was just looking back over my diary from last year and I sowed some chili seeds (Jalapeno and Cayenne) on April 22nd last year and managed to get a crop.

They're overwintering so I'm hoping that we'll get a better crop this year.

I don't have a heated greenhouse, but use a polytunnel. Last year I sowed my chilli and sweet peppers on 4th March.  They cropped well, but when I first put them out in the polytunnel they got a bit of a shock and were set back a bit.  I sowed yesterday, hoping that a week further on will avoid the setback this year.
