Fox den
« on: December 10, 2014, 10:29 »
I have just moved house, my 2 chooks are currently on the patio. There are loads of foxes around here - everyone feeds them, including people who have chickens...
Anyway, both neighbours have/had fox dens & unfortunately so do I!
I'm not too concerned with them getting the chickens as the enclosed house & run is pretty predator proof. Can't let them out although our garden is too big & exposed to fence it all properly. I have plans for a bigger better enclosed area at the bottom of the garden where they'll have more room but this is where the den currently is.
Anyway, enough waffling what is the best way to get rid of the den & deter the foxes? They also keep pooing near the house & I have young children.
Thanks

this page has some ideas to help you deter foxes, but as your neighbours are feeding them I fear you will be fighting a losing battle.

There are laws regarding shotguns - you need a licence, be vetted by the police and have a suitable cabinet etc, also you cannot fire one close to dwellings, so do not go down that route.

I had one on the plot- council refused to help.  Eventually, over a few months continual filling up their entrance and digging some of the heap of dirt out from on top of the den (deliberately causing the roof to cave in) encourage them to move on.

We had a problem with foxes denning alongside the school playground about three years ago. We managed to move them on by putting some moth balls inside a large biscuit tin that had small holes punched in it, enough to let the smell out, but too small for the balls to come out as they are toxic to wildlife if eaten.

This was suggested 'off the record' by an RSPCA man who came out to help us. The alternative was trapping them and having them shot, at considerable cost too. Not a viable option.

The foxes moved off and denned away down the field after that.

I hope this might help you
