Garlic preferences
« on: October 23, 2014, 16:47 »
Hi

Looking for advice on what  type of garlic as I usually plant November would like a very strong flavour not really bothered on size of the cloves, and would like to store them, what are everyone's preference and planting tips, I also usually suffer with rust on my garlic but not on onions or leeks which I find strange.
:D I garden therefore I am

For garlic that's usually ready earlier than most, sometimes as early as the end of May here, I grow Early Purple Wight, a softneck_- love it :)

For the last few years I've grown Music for my later variety - but have to say that it didn't do well this year  :(
So I'm trying Albigensian Wight and EdenRose for next year - both hardnecks.

I agree with Early purple. I got some good sized bulbs with really plump cloves this year. I also grow a lot of Albigensian. Very dependable and also a good size. Although I have always considered it to be softneck. I never get scapes anyway. This year I am also trying music and castano for  the first time, and also a very large white from a french supermarket. The bulbs and cloves are huge and If it didnt smell and taste like garlic I would have said it was elephant garlic. Looking forward to seeing how that one does !

Oh well! There are a few places that say it's hardneck

Quote
Hardneck: the gourmet's choice for their rich flavour and the curly scapes (flower buds) they send up: stir-fry for a real treat in summer. Hardneck garlics don't store well, so eat fresh.
Varieties:  Edenrose: exquisitely flavoured with pink cloves
Lautrec Wight: deep pink cloves and an excellent flavour
Albigensian Wight: a rare hardneck that keeps well into the New Year
but never mind ........
as long as it's garlic

Gosh, what a price. I might not have the choice you have but at £1 a kilo I can look at the bulbs in the market to decide what I want to plant. :D
