results of sweet pepper experiment
« on: October 06, 2014, 18:51 »
Last year I saved a potted sweet pepper and kept it alive all winter.  I then put in into the soil in my polytunnel along with ones I had started from seed a few weeks prior.  There was no difference in size of plant or number of peppers it produced.  I had hoped with the root system it had developed that it would produce a bigger plant and more and earlier peppers but this was  not the case.  SO...  don't bother trying to over winter them, it is not worth it.

 :)

It's a shame if that's your experience :(

Mine fruit earlier than those raised from seed (I have photos in my diary - I'll find the link in a minute) and bear loads of fruit.

I really do think it is worth doing, or I wouldn't bother each year  :)

Must admit I was very disappointed.  But on a good side - all my peppers produced really good peppers this year, of a decent size.

So did I until this year BQ. Grew King of the North (from Real Seeds) and they were fabulous, plus Amy Sweet Hungarian Wax (also RS) and am going to overwinter one if I can.

Overwintering chillies has certainly given earlier crops, so I would expect the same with peppers really.

Yours are very juicy looking there MoS  :D

At risk of de-railing the thread (which I wont) you seem to be growing your tomatoes under the staging - do you have success? I thought that I had a resounding no when I asked in a thread earlier in the year!

(sorry!)

They're gartenperle small bush tomatoes, and they only stayed underneath until the plants/seedlings on the top were planted out. Then the toms got moved up  ;)

I have some Peppers in 1L pots that never got planted out (they have still borne fruit ...) and as they were a range of F1 varieties, on which I was planning to do a Yield and Taste test, I'm aiming to try to keep them alive for the winter and plant in the greenhouse next spring.

My 3 chillies haven't done much, although one has flowers on it and another 3 chillies.  I may bring them in if Brian will let me and try to over winter them, see what happens!

I'm attempting to overwinter a scotch bonnet chilli plant that I neglected all summer. I picked the half dozen or so ripe chillies before unceremoniously uprooting it and bunging it in a pot. The shock meant that the remaining eight chillies have ripened quickly although it's lost an awful lot of leaves. It now appears to be rallying.

Just need to keep it going all winter and see how it does next year...
