Out here our's have been turning goldeny for a couple of months and I have already bartered some with another grower who doesn't like to use money. Not sure how they normally grow here as our neighbour has never seen them before (she asked for seed, we palmed ten fruits on to her!) but the few plants have grown like triffids and are still throwing out babies. But we wanted to put the geese there so as they started eating them we got them in. All forty of them less four which went next door. We will leave them on the wall till frost threatens, usually november, the stash them in the cellar. We have sampled and enjoyed some souped and roasted. OH went back for seconds of soup so I reckon they must be good!

Those look fabulous, Tosca!

I think we'll reign in about twenty this year, but storage like you describe is the best option for us here, although we don't have a cellar, more like a cool shed...!

I hear there's going to be a downturn in the weather so they won't be growing much more now - soon be time to harvest. Then I sling the vines onto next year's potato bed to rot down over winter.

I hope not - I've got 2 full-size butternuts and 3 hopefuls, so I am crossing fingers that it will hold a little longer where I am.  :)
