Japanese wineberry.
« on: July 21, 2014, 22:18 »
So we have had our first fruits of this one, went in late last year. I wasn 't hoping for much seen as I have read that people say they are boring and bland, but I love them, little sweets that have yet to make it home or into a bowl as they go straight in the mouth.

Does anyone else grow these and what sort of harvest will we get in years to come. I may purchase another or two.

They grow really strange rather like little conkers, no sugar needed, sweeter than a raspberry but firm and small like a strawberry, and rather pretty to look at

Hi there BQ I was looking at those the other week on the Kore Nursery website, it was either going to be the Japanese wineberry or the Saskatoon, you might have helped me make my mind up on what I am going to get now. What would you say they taste like?

Its so hard to say they are unique, slightly sweet, fruity but unlike all other fruits. They look so pretty picked and come very compact and neat in appearance.
Sorry thats not much help but they are really nice, fresh tasting, just different.

Pop it in at the end of this year as it will take a while to get going

We've had one for a few years - yield was twice as much in the second year, then has been consistent. the berries are very tasty.  Older canes die back with fruit appearing to be born for 2 years on each cane
