Is there a particular type of moist snad I need to buy to store root veggies in? I have some turnips, beetroot and maybe some carrots if I'm lucky.

I aim to keep most roots down on the plot, but would like to try storing some in this way so they are nearer the house.

- and can I use spent shop bought compost if it is slightly damp and not wet? This would be compost that grew tomatoes first year, carrots the second year and is really spent now.

Personally I've never bothered.

I tend to bring quite a few back from the plot when I visit during winter, (you do get some decent days!) and heel them in at home. They stay nice and fresh and firm.

I don't use sand, just some cheap multi-purpose compost. Just empty it into a box and then bury the roots in there. It's too dry to encourage any root growth, especially if kept cool enough.
