Thanks for the help folks, will try with the dried and fresh chilli as well as a packet of seeds I've got and see which fares best.

I'm sure she'd let me take another one, my main problem is I literally only have one windowsill in the house that I can put anything, and that's full of succulents and herbs now!  Note to self: next time you buy a house check the windowledges are more than 2" deep and don't all have radiators under them
