Strawberry frame
« on: July 02, 2014, 11:55 »
I am wondering about taking up our strawberry plants and growing them off the ground.I have seen sometime ago a steel? frame for using grow bags with strawberry plants in them.Anyone any experience with such a device.I also wonder about a wooden frame that I could make to hold say three growbags.
Any comments would be appreciated .

I've got some strawberries in growbags that I support on breeze blocks and a bit of marine plywood. Works very well and keep the fruit clean and away from slugs.

Hi Nobbie thanks for your reply.Do you just use that for 1 season or would it last for several?

I think that's the third season of fruit in the growbags, I just chucked some wood ash around them in spring. I suppose I should chuck them and start again, but they can get chucked in the corner and ignored so I'll see how they fare come next spring.

I'm going to plant up some cambridge favorite in a growbag for next year as well.

One trouble with growbag compost is that it only has enough nutrients for 6 weeks.  Strawberries are a long-term plant by comparison with most plants which you put in it, and assuming the contraption will hold the weight, I'd suggest a John Innes compost instead.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I had been thinking about making some of these...

Ideal for a small space & would hold a fair amount of compost.
