Bland tasting carrots
« on: June 23, 2014, 18:06 »
Last Autumn I planted, for the first time,  6 pots of Early Nantes 2 carrot seed. They germinated very well and I left them on the allotment to overwinter. They have continued to grow and now I am harvesting them. A good 10% went to seed, but the others were as thick as a man's finger and twice as long. So expectation was high....
until I had them for dinner. Absolutely no taste at all.
Is this what happens with early carrots?  or have I chosen the wrong variety?

They are not shown on seeds packets as an over-wintering variety. Could this be the reason - not suitable for purpose?

Nantes Frubund is the over-wintering variety.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Point taken but the packet does say to sow in winter so I did it a bit sooner. The seedlings were only about 2" tall, and didn't really start to grow until the spring. The roots were more yellow in colour, so a lack of carotene may be the answer?

I've no idea, but at the end of the day you did not sow according to the instructions of the packet!

I think there's a big difference in flavour among carrots. We grew some last year (can't remember the type) and they were fab, we had some from a plot neighbour and they were quite bitter by comparison. It might be that you just don't like that particular carrot type.
