I heard it through the Grape vine
« on: June 18, 2014, 07:51 »
Good Morning

My mum bought me a grape vine to go into the greenhouse which we will hopefully complete by inserting the remaining polycarb into this weekend. A few people have said that I need to plant the root outside the greenhouse and then put the plant itself into the greenhouse. I'm not really sure how though!! The greenhouse is on concrete shuttering which is set on plastic membrane so I'm not sure I'd be able to dig underneath and plant the root outside, it'd also bend and potentially snap the vine wouldn't it. Any ideas please I'm at a loss with this one!

Thanks

Why do you need to put it in a greenhouse?

I'm not sure, it's what some people have told me is all.

You get better grapes/yield inside, specially if it's an eating (rather than a winemaking variety)
You can plant the roots inside but it will need more watering, according to the RHS advice

Oh for a greenhouse as big as the one at Hampton Court to grow it in

Have you seen how much land the root system takes up? It's HUGE, and has to be left bare of any vegetation or the grapes suffer.

Grapes do well outside here, but then I am a lot further south than you are. Have you got space for a massive tub for the roots?

  oh dear I have planted the roots of mine the other side of the greenhouse frame but there is a path there too is that maybe the wrong place to have put it. It's growing ok in fact very quick.

We just tipped the plant slightly on its side and fed it through the hole under the greenhouse frame which is also in concrete blocks we then tied the shoots to a stake and Gently and gradually it went upright. If you want eating grapes indoors is best as the skin is not so thick on the grape.

I was planning to do as Ma Lowe said but make a hole in the polycarb of the greenhouse and surround the passing through part of the vine with a little plastic membrane so as the vine expands so does the hole. The roots will go under some black membrane covered in bark chippings. I have a friend round the corner who has done this and also has an outdoor vine and she says her favourite grapes are definitely the ones from indoors.

To be fair it's nearly older than the Ark....which may have something to do with it being a bit needy.  :D
