Tomato plant feed
« on: June 07, 2014, 08:39 »
can anyone confirm if im going mad but I have in back of memory information that old tomato plants can be cut up and put in water to ferment into liquid feed.

I have started to save branches that i've snapped off and the shoots that are not wanted in 4 pint milk bottle filled with water

any comments would be appreciated

Can't say I've heard that one before
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

My nan used to say that but I thought it was old clap trap.  would be cool if true.

It will be fine if you want to spread disease... You should even wash your hands and secateurs after nipping every plant... and dont smoke while doing it as the mosaic virus from tobacco can affect toms...

I haven't heard of that being done. The only thing I've seen suggested is using fermenting tomatoes to create CO2 to help tomato growth.

Providing the stuff you add is healthy, I can't see a problem except I've no idea what NPK ratio you would get and whether it would therefore be beneficial or what dilution rate you would have to use.

Give it a try on a few plants (easy if they're being grown in pots or growbags) and report back.

Hmm - I think I'll stick with my Comfrey tea, because it's a definite. A nice drop of weak cold coffee (no milk) also seems to perk them up in the leafy stage.

Does cold tea do the same. My nan used to water all her house plants with cold tea.

I think I'd be worried about fomenting blight if the pieces of tomato plant were left unattended. Something in this oi' grey head says that spores could develop easier if the toms are not being cared for, but I have no proof of this particular concern!

I agree with Gavin that smoking near toms is bad news as well!

To be fair, smoking pretty much anywhere is bad news although it's usually humans not tomatoes that are damaged!
