Organic sawfly massacree?
« on: June 03, 2014, 11:00 »
I've just harvested all my gooseberries, as the plants have been attacked by sawfly. Luckily, the fruit was ready before they came, so it's at least fine for cooking. The question is, whether there's anything I can do to either wipe out the little wotnots or stop them overwintering and coming back to munch next year? Keeping it organic and I haven't got access to chickens BTW  :D
cheers

You just have to pick them off and squish them. I try to check every day. Last year I was picking off at least 3 or 4 from small 1-2 foot tall bushes per day, but this year so far I've only found one on our 3 bushes. It's still early in the season though!

They appeared within about 3 days and had stripped half the bush! By then there must have been dozens of the beggars. And it's not easy even picking gooseberries from this bush, it's got some serious thorns :-0

What eats sawfly grubs naturally I wonder? Probably not ladybirds as I've plenty of those atm.
