Just a thought. How about just ringing the bottom of the plants with pruning twigs to lift the fruit and foliage.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

For this year I'll have a go with the cardboard I think, then maybe next year I'll try the weed suppressant fabric stuff.  I was thinking of trying shredded paper but thought it would just blow around. Has anyone tried it?
