Enchytraeids - Pot Worms
« on: May 10, 2014, 15:59 »
Its been too windy to do much at the plot today, so instead I was repotting things in the GH.
When I came to empty out one particular pot I noticed that it was infested with 100s of little white wriggly things - maybe 1cm long and a few mm wide. I hadn't come across these things before - and as the cucumber that had been growing in that pot had just committed harakiri/seppuku I took the safe option and emptied the compost out into the green bin.
On looking up what the critters were I discover that they are pot worms that are actually harmless/beneficial - the cucumber must have had its own reasons :(, "bereft of life, it rests in peace"
I was wondering how common they are ?- first time that I've ever seen them as far as I can recall.

Although I still have a tropical aquarium I used to be a lot more fanatical than I am these days, and used to 'cultivate' them as fish food, although I used to know them rather less technically as 'white worms.'  ;)

Usually managed to find enough to start a colony in the compost heap, and then kept them in damp leaf mould and fed them with bread soaked in milk, and they bred like the clappers.

They tend to die or otherwise disappear when it starts getting warmer, which makes me wonder whether it was too cool for your cukes, although who am I to say, being up there with the best at killing cukes?!
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older
