Norlett - help needed
« on: July 27, 2008, 17:00 »
Dear all,

I have just acquired an old Norlett rotovator of some description that i picked up at a scrap yard. Looking at the B&S engine code it's circa 1978 with 5HP engine.

My questions are as follows.

1) Can anyone tell me what model this is? Reading the forums i suspect it might be a tillermate 5?
2) What are the dual drive belts for? 2 speed/reverse?
3) Does anyone have an owners manual for the rotovator?

I have photo's but don't know how to post them with this message. If anyone is willing to help get in touch and i'll e-mail them.

The major problem with is at the moment is that the clutch assembly is completely missing and i need some help and guidance in the form of photo's or drawings from someone out there with the same (complete) machine. I think it's going to be a case of perhaps making the part? Unless of course anyone else out there has the appropriate part?

Thanks,

Rich.

I don't know for sure, but most clutches on this type of machine consists simply of a pulley on a spring loaded moving arm, that tightens the belt when you pull a handle or lever up on the handles.

Dugless - yes i have already scoured the internet which lead me here, info very thin on the ground on these Norletts it seems. Best info i could find was on this forum.

Gwiz - i also have an old 1975 Norlett with a 3 hp B&S engine in running order. You are right in saying that the clutch is simply just a pulley on a spring loaded moving arm. The only thing that complicates matter on this 5hp model is that it seemingly takes 2 drive belts as there so i'm not sure how that impacts on the clutch pulley design and operation.

reckon you could use two bearings, seperated by shim spacers so that the belts don't touch?

Yes i was thinking the same. Shouldn't be too difficult to make something. Still don't know why there are two drive belts though.

wish I could tell you, but I'm not too familiar with the norlets. It could well be a reverse (like the merry tiller) do they both go in the same area?

Yes they are side by side. One groove appears to take an A belt and the other a V belt.

guess what i have a norlett tiller 5-s and its complete,

theres two levers on the handlebar
pull  them one at a time and with the right lever and the tines move forward and reverse if you pull the left,
I use em both at the same time to stall the machine.
if you like i could takes pic of the belts wheel and clutch assembly for you.

Hello everyone!
I have the same Norlett rotovator as those on the picture. Can you tell me which are the dimensions of the drive belts on it?
Greetings from Croatia!
Thank you!

we have a link to some manuals here - http://www.allotment-garden.org/rotovator/index.php , maybe that will give you the belt length?

Hello Grandel!
I've already seen that page and read the manuals and didn't find a belt dimension. (maybe I'm blind)
I thought that someone on the forum knows the exact dimensions of the belt.
I bought a belt that isn't original, but it works.
Anyway, thanks for the advice. :-)
