potting on cucumbers - depth
« on: May 04, 2014, 09:59 »
Did I read that you should plant cucumbers at the same depth when you pot on.  i.e. don't plant deeper, like you can with tomatoes?

Any other seedlings you shouldn't plant deeper?  (Yes, some of seedlings are a bit leggy)

Its recommended to plant cucumbers at the same depth to try and prevent stem rot. They are prone to giving up if it gets too cold, too wet etc. If your plants are too leggy just tie them to a cane and they will be fine.

Yes you are correct - cucumbers should be planted at the same depth when your pot on, or plant in their final position otherwise you risk stem rot. Apart from tomatoes which you can plant deeper I find that if seedlings go leggy they really do not do well but it is worth a try just to see what happens.

I'm not a huge fan of growbags as I think watering can be tricky for them; however, you can cut them in half and stand the halves on end - so that there's a greater depth of compost for the plant.  Otherwise put them in pots - that's what I'll be doing.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Get a big pot, get a growbag. Slice it open and empty into a pot.

Much more stable!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
