One of the older plot holders on my site was talking to me the other day and told me when planting brassicas to put a pinch of lime and a small piece of rhubarb in first and then plant the brassica on top. It is a 99% guarantee against club root. I don't suffer from club root, but just wondered if the old theory was true or if anyone had heard of it?

I've heard of it and rhubarb did not work on my plot. I find a generous dusting of lime does help, but does not completely stop clubroot in a bad area. The organism involved is a slime which tends to thrive in wet, acid conditions.

Adding a dusting of lime at the time you plant out the brassica with a decent sized rootball will help the plant to grow strongly in an attempt to beat the impact of clubroot.

Rhubarb is acidic and I can't see how it would work.  I think that element is one of those old myths...

Lime for the club root and something tells me rhubarb possibly for cabbage root fly.
