Piper Nigrum? Peppercorn Plant?
« on: February 10, 2013, 12:35 »

Hey guys,

I've got (what I was sold as) a peppercorn plant. I've had it around 5 years living on my north facing wondowsill in a large pot and water it daily.

Its grown well. I've given it a few big trims over the years and it always responds well with lots of new growth but Its never flowere. And I'm just not sure when I should really be pruning, what form to prune it to, and weather its in the right place or not.

Any help, advice or knowledge of these plants would be good.

- Gary.

peppercorn plants are tropical vines that grow to 10 - 15 ft, so it's no wonder it hasn't fruited on your windowsill .

I've seen them growing as "street trees" in Italy (or could be Greece, can't remember) and yes, 10-15 feet sounds about right - I did pick a cluster of still rather reddish peppercorns as a very novel souvenir though!

Given the price of peppercorns I think you'd see them everywhere if it were possible to get them to mature and produce in this country.  ;)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Hi. I live over in Sheffield. I've been trying to get hold of a piper nigrum plant for years. Where did you get it? Would you consider selling me some cuttings on your next prune?

I'm sorry you are unlikely to get a reply - the OP was last on the forum in October last year.
