Flaky skin on a dog
« on: April 09, 2014, 20:03 »
Indie, bless him, has always flaky skin and it seems worse at the moment.  Is it cod liver oil that helps with this or something else? He is a bit itchy at times.
Wash your hands, stay at home, distance yourself

it could be food related either an allergy or something lacking. Also it could be an allergy thats not food related such as hayfever, your vet will advise. My old girl has to take piriton for her skin allergies and my 2 newfoundlands have a dry food which is grain free, rice free, egg free, chicken free and gluten free because of their intolerances.
Staffies are softer than you think.

I give stinky salmon oil, when I had him it was really bad and I bought a bottle of yumega oil but make sure you're sitting down when you look at the price.

One of our dogs has a similar skin complaint, plus he has a flea allergy. He has the usual flea treatments for the allergy. I also give him any oil from cans of fish and roll his biscuits in any fat I have left in the pan after shallow frying. He also gets the largest share of any fat that's been cut off meat and when we buy beef bones, I make sure he has the one with most fat on it. He very rarely has flare-ups now, but if he does, I rub a bit of tea tree oil into the patch of flaky skin. This oil has antiseptic properties and is said to be useful for treating skin conditions. It is toxic if taken by mouth, but our dog never tries to lick it off, perhaps because it has a "camphoraceous" smell, as Wikipedia puts it.

He used to need prednisone for his condition, but it's a while now since he's needed it.

I think it's just flaky skin, not an allergy.  I went through that with Ollie bless him.  There is certainly no flare ups etc, he just is like that.  He does get any meat fat that I drain off  ::) which he loves.  I think Ollie got primrose oil from his immunologist for his skin troubles so I will try that.  I couldn't remember which oil it was - there seems to an oil for everything these days.  I have never heard of Yumega oil - will have to look that up

Cheers everyone :)

It its a dry flaky bit often rubbing coconut oil in can help- but this can be tricky as ours love the taste and its hard to get the oil on without it being licked off your fingers! ::)

but is lovely and moistening!
Very often quite lost- would be more lost if I could work out where I was!- But always find my way home.....
