Think I've done enough for the moment. I sowed nearly 200 feet of peas yesterday. These are now residing under a load of well weighted down debris netting and can just get on with it!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Meeces do lurve to take the peas.  It is quite possible there are no peas there now.

I heard about an ingenious anti mouse scheme recently.  They had been starting the peas in guttering in the polytunnel to go out when warmer and drier.  And they all disappeared - mice had taken the lot.  So now they hang the lengths of guttering from the poly tunnel roof so the mice cant get there!  Balanced on the support beams the mice found the peas, but not hanging from baler twine - not yet anyway!

I carefully put a seed in each cardboard tube, grew them two 3 inches and put them out in the allotment under a cloche. After two week acclimatising I took the cloche off, they were about 5 inches and looking great.
Result, pea stumps, they've been eaten - gutted.

I've put the cloche back over in case they start to grow again but I think I've blown it. glad I started some more off meanwhile, safely in doors for now.

What is the germination time outside DD.  I planted mangetout 2 weeks ago. Am I being impatient?

Germination chart here, says 10 days - mine were up in 6 days.

Did you net them against birds and mice? if not I bet they've been eaten. Gently dig around at the end of the row and have a look to see if anything is happening.

Hmm. I have just been muttering to myself that my pea germination is poor this year.
Mine are early onward too, but sown in guttering in the greenhouse - a method I have been using successfully for several years now.
I guess it's not impossible for a mouse to get in there, but about half of them have come up, and I have never had a problem before.
Ho hum

Elaine
This is my own experience this year. I've done three sowings so far and no results.  It's not mice and they were Early Onward.  Got some Kelvedon Wonder to try now. Hope I'm not too late and they can catch up.

Will have a look tomorrow.  I haven't had any problem before, but maybe they have found them somehow. They are in a raised bed well away from any long grass or trees.  I have found a piece of debris netting so I can copy you DD if they mice have eaten the last lot.  Do you just peg it down and cover the edges with soil until they are up?

In essense, yes. Then the supports go in along with the first level of twine and the netting is draped over the
m to protect against pigeons.

I normally start mine off under glass using a length of old plastic guttering. This has given me far better results than planting the seeds straight out.
Get me to my allotment before I lose the plot!
