Will A Fish Tank And SAD Light Work For Seedlings?
« on: March 23, 2014, 20:45 »
Hello all

I have just been looking at my newly sowed seeds and it got me thinking

I have a couple of spare fish tanks and a SAD light that I use to help when I'm depressed

I was thinking of making a small greenhouse set up with the tanks and light

The SAD light uses full spectrum LEDs in case anyone is un familiar with them

Has anyone tried this sort of set up?

All the best

Mark

I believe they should be fine... I use SAD's and a wooden converted box with a door.. My seedlings have done really well..

Not used one with a light, but I had an old fish tank that I used and put an old DG unit over the top.  It helps keep the seedlings warm, and with the top on, also helps stop evaporation.

Well I have put together my fish tank set up

I have popped the peppers and tomatoes in it and left the cucumbers out as they are doing well with just daylight

If the lights are specifically full spectrum, they are perfect for growing. The aim of them is to replicate the suns rays, therefore perfect for growing just about anything.

Dont seal it and make sure they dont overheat.. no more than 20 - 22 degrees or so is perfect. I have a small pc fan and a phone charger as the power source and a temp controller set to switch on at 21 deg.. works well.

Here is my DIY one and today I just got a 6 drawer cabinet to make another larger one.. Happy days...

Thanks Sunny - the onions are doing really well but time to move them out and into the conservatory to fend fro themselves as I have other smaller onions to pot on and they will use more space so the oldies out... I removed 2 trays of chillies and peppers a few weeks ago and they are doing well in the conservatory..

Cant wait to get the new project going..

(See the new other pic I posted with a view of the whole box of the first one on my post above.)

Thanks for the replies, I checked the seedlings this morning and it seems having a good few hours under the SADS and striplight has done them the world of good

The tomatoes have grown at least 6mm overnight :)

The peppers are yet to pop through yet but I was sorta expecting it

I have thinned out my cucumbers, as usual I was on the cautious side and planted two seeds per pot. I have selected the stronger seedlings and even though they are outside of the tank they still seem to be going strong

Hopefully I will be able to get some of the plot turned over next month, its still soggy and I don't want to risk making it any worse

I'm not looking forward to lugging the grow bags up to the plot due to not having transport at the moment

Such Fun :)
