Saw a few when I dug over our new allotment which was overgrown for a couple of years. would me digging it over reduce the numbers or are chemicals the only way to go?

Cultivation normally is enough, but if you've seen a few, how about trying this.

This is from the University of Kentucky, agricultural college site.

Bait/suntrap do this when the soil is still moist, but wormed up.

Dig a few holes 4 inch deep 9 inch wide. Put 1/2 cup of corn-wheat mixture in the bottom, cover with LOOSE muck, cover with plastic.

Check in a week's time. You can also count the catch if desired.

They use this for testing, can't see why couldn't be used for trapping in the smaller garden.

Don't know if they are any good for fishing.
