Weed Suppressant Membrane
« on: February 16, 2014, 13:37 »
Hi all! Weed suppressant membrane is really quite costly! We are definitely going to use it in our fruit cage with our strawberry plants. Anywhere else that you would recommend as a must have? Onions? Leeks? Rach x

The only thing I use it on is the paths.  Some people grow their squash / courgettes through them.  Others use it for spuds, but I think that's a little too much faff.  It's quite good round permanent fruit bushes.

Be aware that it is a slug haven so your strawbs might just get a little bit nibbled!
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Hi - over the last two years I have used it on courgettes, marrows, sweetcorn, strawberries and onions. This season I'm adding my garlic, leeks, broad beans and outdoor toms.   I was given a roll so was really lucky. I burn the holes so it dosen't fray. Onions are great through it and really I did not spend more than 10 minutes for the whole season weeding them.. It works so so well and only the odd weed come through the holes. I thought the strawbs would be hammered by the slugs but found totally the opposite. I sprinkled a few slug pellets twice throughout the season only. Same as on the courgettes and squashes. I didnt loose one from slugs when planted out which was a miracle. When I remove the fabrics and fold them up after the season there were also very few slugs under it. I think its too prickly for them. (I use the plastic polypropylene type)

Pics below show us burning the holes and setting them out for planting and planting some onions through it. Also how well the sweetcorn and courgettes did..
