Sowing seeds in cells .. sizes
« on: January 20, 2014, 11:50 »
I intend sowing some seeds shortly, starting with onions all of which will be indoors, in cells.

What size cells would folk here recommend for various seeds ?

The onions, will remain in the cells until planting out time, maybe in April.

I'm not too keen on the 'cell insert' type units, so will try and buy some plug plant trays online. These trays are far stronger and are self supporting, rather than the cell inserts, which need a normal seed tray to sit in.

thank you  :nowink:

My onion seed is in modules which have 20 cells to a half size tray. Some are single sown, but most have two or three seeds and will be planted out as a little clump at the start of May, weather permitting.

Spring onions are sown in the same way, but with more seed per cell -- around six.

Hope that helps :D

I wouldn't recommend the tiny plug plant trays you receive when ordering the smallest-sized plug plants. I have recently posted on another similar thread where I suggested broadcast sowing into a supermarket plastic deep-ish tray, then pricking out into a larger module tray.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Similarly to sunshineband, I use a module with 20 cells to a half seed tray.

Try these. They are strong and self-supporting and last years.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Do you just fill those trays with compost and sow the seeds in the compost?
It refers to the tray as an insert - what does it sit in and why?  Does it mean that you can put it in a propagator with a bottom and cover?
Also what's the best way to water the seeds?

Thanks

Yes

It's a seed tray insert, it sits in errrrrr - a seed tray. In this case a half size one. A lot of seed tray inserts are very flimsy and need the seed tray to keep the cells together.
Does it mean that you can put it in a propagator with a bottom and cover?
Yes
Also what's the best way to water the seeds?
From the bottom, each cell has a drainage hole.

Thanks
