A vent problem - can anyone help?
« on: January 27, 2014, 15:30 »
Some days ago I noticed lavvy (Lav pekin) straining to poo - a brownie - she was having trouble getting it out and it came out in bits.  She then seemed fine and happy (as they do).. until today...
Came home and found and egg stuck to her rear end.  Must be her first and it was stuck to her feathers so I gently bathed her in warm water and got it free of her.  Her vent looks sore and red but no blood.  It prolapsed just a bit but went back in easily.  She is now relaxing in front of the fan heater and I'll dig my books out and find out what to do - but any advice in the meantime would be so welcome...

Our first egg day wasn't a happy one... oh dear.

One grandma and 4 baby Pekins.

Found this (quoted from member Carla) and more useful and anything I found in my 3 books! Our case isn't this bad but a bit of anusol cream is the thing it seems...

As joyful said, Germaloids all the way, 3 times a day....but I put LOADS on, pushed the prolapse back in and keep her in the dark for a few days. If it keeps popping back out, more cream and put it back in. Took me 6 days of pushing it back in before it would stay...but over the 6 days, it shrank considerably. I let her back out with her friends because she was lonley, sprayed her bum purple and kept checking on her every few hours. Gave her a warm bath each morning and helped her poo, more cream and sent her back out. Constant vigilance and a lot of hard care and a prolapse can be fixed. Not saying it wont happen again, but she's fixed for now.

Glad she's better. If it happens again try the long warm bath followed by hair dryer and then putting sugar on and around the vent. It helps shrink the tissues.

Thank you.  She seems fine - a warm bath and tube of anusol at the ready this morning but she seems too well to do anything!!!

I've read about sugar - also stop feeding layers pellets/keep in the dark to give them an egg laying break. Just corn then?  Don't fat hens stuggle to lay eggs more?

In the meantime another hen was frantically looking for an egg laying zone despite putting her in the nesting box (she was straight out of there thank you very much)!  I blocked her in there for an hour and now she's free to hop out she's snuggled down and staying in. Haven't checked for an egg but she'll hop out eventually and I'll have a look then.

Daren't go out these days!

Good news about whitey & hope lavvy is doing OK.

I know it can seem a bit alarming when they are looking for a nesting site the first time but don't worry too much - usually they seem to instinctively end up going to the right place!
