Pinching out sweet pea
« on: January 03, 2014, 18:46 »
Hi folks, I sowed a load of sweet pea back in October.  When they were a couple of inches high I pinched out the tip.  They have all now developed side shoots that are longer than the original shoot.  Should I leave these alone or should I pinch these as well.

Cheers,   Tony.

I always try to get some sown in late   autumn, but recurring problem is legginess.
This year started the same, so when a sideshoot bud appeared low down on each stem I nipped out to about an inch above it on each plant.           All seem to respond well, healthy growing buds and thickening stems.
I got this idea because one year my geese ate all the seedlings down to about  a quarter inch above the soil but they all recovered and did really well that year. The sweet peas, not the geese.
I grow them in an unheated greenhouse and plant out by Feb or March.. Had blooms by 1st May .
