putting in posts
« on: February 17, 2014, 22:06 »
Sorry if this is a daft question-
Can I put fence posts in while the soil is this wet- it is drained with no flooding. I was just going to use post crete with a bucket of infill in the hole

Thanks

How big are your fence posts? We have a field where we used a metal knocker-inner to hammer farmer's fencing stakes into our silty soil, but if yours are not so big, then use a lump-hammer so you don't damage the tops. Wet soil should be easier to do this with, rather than when dried out.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Hi GG,
They are only 3"x3" 8ft the holes are already dug down about 1 1/2 foot. It was more to do with the postcrete setting that concerned me.

Postcrete set fairly fast it will be fine.

Don't forget tho the deeper they go the longer they will stand up   ;)

Hi DMG, remember to square the bottom of the hole , lot of post I have seen when I replace them, the hole has been dug so the bottom is just over the size of the post, concrete end up as inverted wedge, try and get the bottom of the hole at least the size as top.

I also use plumbs, better known as big stones, bricks better still if you have them is broken Kirbs , then place the concrete around.

Leave the posts a a couple of days this time of year to the concrete harden, better still a week, remember concrete strength is related to age, on sites we ask for concrete at a certain strength, this would be obtained normally after 7 day unless specified different , again depends on temp.

I also go for a 1 to 3 relation, ie 2 foot down for 6 foot up yours look just a little short, I would go down another 6inchs.
