I've got a mattock, and it is genius on my heavy soil. Plus there's the pick edge for really tough bits.

Mmmm interesting combo.. In Africa, our Mattock was a strong digger hoe and on the other side was an axe.. They are mainly used for digging out trees/stumps and their roots.. so you could dig on one stroke and then chop on the next simply by a quick half rotation mid swing.

I've got lots of tree roots to get out, plus an old hardcore road.  People use them on our site to break the ground in summer when it has set like concrete.
