I bought too many onion sets this time is it ok to keep the rest until spring and plant them then thanks

They are not really Summer onions so for the price of new sets I'd go for proper maincrop summer type.

Plus..... winter onions are not such good storers.

You can pull them as soon as they are big enough to use, rather than wait until maturity. (Cue Gavin and green onion sauce?).

Yup DD - thanks... I'm here right on cue...

They are just  filler to have onions a couple of months before the main crop are ready. I always start to pull mine on 1st May each year and use them as green onions in white sauce.. a bit like leeks in sauce but tastier. Then by the time the winter onions are bulbed up a bit and all eaten the main crop will be ready to start eating as well. Hence we are normally totally self sufficient in onions.. I then follow them with beetroot or some late peas or beans..
