Rhubarb advice please
« on: December 08, 2013, 22:17 »
I need some advice on what to do with my Rhubarb.  I had 3 plants but got virtually nothing off them for the past two years as they keep sending up flower heads.  It now looks like one has died (the leaves had completely died by the end of June and the crown looks like it is rotted away), the other two don't look too healthy either (one has started to ooze a sticky gooey stuff).  I am on two minds whether I would be better off digging them out and starting from scratch with new healthy crowns or whether there is something I can do to rescue them.

It's possible you might have buried the crowns a bit too deep. You could try one more year and see how it goes. Or, make a nice mound of compost and manure and put a new crown in that. The rise will give better drainage and ensure a healthier plant. Rhubarb can't tolerate swamping. You could also do another mound and dig up one of the troublesome crowns to plant in there. If the crown hasn't rotted too much, it would recover.
