Growing ginger.
« on: November 23, 2013, 20:01 »

Has any body ever grown ginger from seed or from the root? I've picked up a nice piece while shopping and was thinking of giving it a go. But don't know where to start or what time of year to plant. I know it is fom a hot climate, and it likes lots of water and good drainage. So was thinking of planting it in the PT in one of the raised beds..

thanks for your replies.

I have grown it from a root, I seem to remember the airing cupboard was involved!

I once grew some from root that I bought at the green grocers. I started it in the house and then moved it to the greenhouse in late spring, it was doing very nicely until I went on holiday and my neighbour drowned it.

It's a tropical plant, and really needs temperatures over 28C. I doubt it will succeed in the ground in a polytunnel.

Some advice here from Kew..........

Have been scratching around and found this site called Gardening enthusiast and down loaded their search bar, as its got quite a few different things on it to do with gardening.

Also found a bit about growing Ginger  :), http://www.veggiegardeningtips.com/growing-baby-ginger-as-a-backyard-garden-vegetable-crop/

I know the guy whos growing it is in America, but might still be worth a go, just like sweet potatoes are from a tropical country we try growing them.

will let you know how we get on.

I might try a bit over here next year. If we get the temperatures we had this year it should do OK outside as long as it's watered. :)

This spring, I bought a huge bowl in the market for £1. Some of it sprouted so I planted it up. Out of 6 chunks of root, only 2 grew, one on an inside windowsill and one in the greenhouse, and they didn't amount to much.

However... when I dug them up a couple of weeks ago the chunks that hadn't sprouted were smooth, plump and juicy, and in much better condition than when I'd planted them. They were the best bits of ginger I've ever used in the kitchen, and the easiest to prepare. So next year I won't be growing any, but I'll definitely be buying another £1 bowl full, and storing the roots in damp compost until I need them.
