Butternut disaster
« on: November 13, 2013, 14:46 »
Last year I had a good crop but they did outstrip the bindweed for growth, this year gave them (4 plants) plenty of space and they expanded to about 10 sq ft. BUT just One squash, plenty of male flowers for months but no females till late August, hence no time to mature. Is just a bad batch or should I be tipping out the tendrils to promote more?

I just leave mine to get on with it, so think you were just unlucky....... that said butternuts are the most difficult to grow of the squash family, so perhaps a different variety would be better  ;)

One of my 4 plants died, then I had 4 fruits, but like you drizabone, late fruiting.  I used one in soup, wasn't bad, but the others are still hanging in the greenhouse in nets hoping for a bit more sunshine and no frosts!   ;)

I didn't get any this year, though the plant wound itself round anything it could find.

I think butternuts must be temperamental.......mine were very successful this year with no effort at all. Great big things weighing at least 3 kgs each. Last year, a complete and utter failure with lots fussing and nurturing.
