Let the fun begin….
« on: November 10, 2013, 18:10 »
Hiya All,

My dear mother has just passed on 10 x 1 Gal Glass Demijohns & assorted wine equipment from her brewing days, along with a VERY well worn copy of CJ Berry (which is in pieces). I have just ordered (to complete the set, so to speak) 3 10L fermenting bins, 1 x 25L Wine Fermenter (for a special project), and various bumph which one apparently needs to make wine (Chemicals, bungs, airlocks etc.).

Observations - Wine is a LOT OF FAFF compared to beer, but in a fun way.

To start with, I have started 2 Gal Sloe Wine (with a few blackberries for colour) and 1 Gal Pumpkin Wine (with homegrowed squash) (largely following Jack Keller's recipes). Pictures below;

I'm actually running out of fermenting space! 2 5 Gal (1 x Port, 1 x "Proper Job" (extract kit) beers in Primary, 40pt Beer conditioning in bottle, 1 Gal Pumpkin Wine, 2 Gal Sloe Wine. About to order the Apple juice (through work) for 5 Gal of Apfelwein.

Brewing is turning out to be a nice winter hobby when the allotment is all but dead.

Making wine is the best way I know of storing fruit and veg.
