raised bed spacing
« on: October 11, 2013, 17:38 »
I have two raised beds.  This year I spaced things out as per on the plot, but I am thinking they could be spaced closer.  Could I just space them out at the distance between plants without the distance between rows?  I will be growing carrots in them next year so can I just stuff them in the space?  they are 1.2M wide and 1.8 M long.   Thinking about it, my plot is devided up into beds 1M wide and 5M long.  I used the row spacing then as well.  Should I use the same spacing.  Can I grow more this way or does it lead to crowding?

One of the advantages of raised bed is that you can grow closer together because I think of the extra depth of soil, plus you don't reckon to stand on them. My beds aren't raised but are 5ft wide & for carrots I space the rows 1 ft apart. It will all depend on what it is you are growing, try & picture it full grown. Various books are available on raised bed growing which will give lots of info on spacing.

Mostly I space crops equidistant from each other in the beds, with the exception of onions (makes weeding easier) and potatoes (need space to earth up)

Werks fer me  ;)

The idea is that when plants are fully grown their leaves should be just touching, in all directions.  So effectively you don't need rows at all.  Because you don't walk on raised beds the soil does not get compacted so plants need less space.

I can just get my knees between my 'raised' wood edged beds to weed! ::)
Probably too close but I'd sooner suffer than waste any more space than I need too :D

Snap! just enough space to kneel down which is also about the width of a slab if I ever get OH to come and help me lift them!

Works for me too :) I plant the outer rows  close to the edge so that they have the extra leaf-space of overhanging the paths, and then plant "rows" or "staggered" to get about the same spacing between plants.

Spuds I do two rows, for earthing up (and not too close to the edge otherwise I can't earth them up on the outer side!)
