moving corkscrew hazel
« on: October 07, 2013, 10:49 »
Hi,
We are reorganising our garden and want to move a corkscrew hazel, which is about 2m high. Would that be possible over the winter? can I just prune it right back and dig out as big a rootball as I can and replant it?

Thanks!

I am no expert but I think pruning back is NOT desirable.
Big rootball idea should work - water for several days in advance and have new home totally ready before lifting.

hmmm thanks

Going to be tricky to move if I can't prune it. Why do you think it shouldn't be pruned?

RHS advice on the plant and the pruning.

It does say that harder pruning may spoil plants in this pruning group, so I guess the risk is that it won't grow back in the shape or way that you would like it to grow.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I have a corkscrew hazel and if I was to move it, I'd do the big rootball as suggested. But I wouldn't prune it. Little point of doing so if you want the corkscrew look. I'd take out only dead or crossed branches that rub.
